Hello and welcome to the official blog of Miss Metro 2016 Meredith Olson!
Let me introduce myself.
The Miss Greater Des Moines/ Miss Metro Pageant was the first pageant that I have ever competed in. As a "newbie" I must say that all of the pageant stereotypes are false! I have made so many wonderful friends in the process and I am still making new ones through the amazing Miss America Organization everywhere I go. Miss Iowa will be here before I know it. I hope to keep you all updated on my journey through the MAO and all of the fantastic learning experiences along the way!
I am a proud Hawkeye at the University of Iowa studying to be a K-12 Music Educator. In May I will walk across the stage in cap and gown so happy and proud of all of the hard work I have done in my undergraduate program.
My platform, Music Speaks, stresses the importance of keeping music in schools. Growing up my life has always been full of song and I think every student should have the opportunity to have music in their educational setting. Music gives students the chance to move around, to be loud and to express themselves while the rest of their academic day might be more rigid. Students are told to sit still, be quiet, listen, and "do what they are told" 90% of their day, so the fine arts give the students a chance to wiggle, be loud and to just be kids!
I am a world traveler. For Thanksgiving this year I traveled all over Austria with my mom and I have so many amazing memories to be thankful for. My traveling has exposed me to cultures, music and customs from all around the world. I have visited 8 different countries and I hope to expand the list soon! I had the opportunity to see the Opera while in Vienna and to walk on the very same grounds that the Sound of Music was filmed.
I am an avid supporter and participator of the arts here at the University of Iowa. This summer I played the role of Vittoria in Gilbert and Sullivan's The Gondoliers. Performing is something I absolutely love to do and I have done so in a multitude of ways. To start I have sung and played keyboard for a band called No Coast locally in Iowa City, I have sung for the concert series at the Iowa Public Library "A Little Lunch Music" as well as many performances with the University of Iowa's choirs. One of my favorite singing performances was when I was able to sing for a group of high schoolers and talk about my passion for music and to show them that a career in music is possible and an excellent choice.
I have one sibling, my quick witted, fun and quirky younger sister Marissa. If you ever get the chance to meet her, she is TALLER than me. I am wearing heels in this picture. She would want you to know that.
Well there you have it! A little glimpse into the life of Miss Metro 2016! I will be sure to update again soon. You can also keep track of my journey to Miss Iowa on my facebook page: Miss Metro 2016 Meredith Olson. Thank you to all of my supportive friends and family. I would not be here without all of you.
Lots of love, Miss Metro Meredith Olson
